Ethan DeWeese Capstone Theme: Toys and Masks
My name is Ethan DeWeese. I am 14 years old. I was born in Portland, Oregon and have lived here my entire life. I play soccer and my friends are a huge part of my life. I also enjoy playing video games, primarily first person shooters. On weekends, I like to hang out with friends and play video games with them. I am going to Cleveland High School next year and I hope to attend some type of computer programming or graphic design class there because I am interested in that. I also hope to do ceramics and I am very excited to meet new people at my school.
My capstone is 3D Art (ceramics), and my theme is toys and masks. I am interested in toys and masks because I want to find out what makes people connect with them on an emotional level. I am also interested in why people find them so interesting. I like to tell little stories with the masks or characters that I make, through face expressions and emotions. I want to find out why I like making 3D models and representations of things in my daily life, such as donuts, pizza, video game soda machines, etc. The only answer I have so far as to why I like to make these things is because it’s fun and the art looks realistic and cool. The art I make seem to replicate the things I like and see. For example, I love pizza and donuts, so I make these things. I play a lot of “Call of Duty Zombies” right now, so I made sculptures that represent the Perkacola machines. I am realizing right now that for the past year I have been unintentionally and unconsciously making artwork that reflects things in my life without even realizing it. I am not sure why, but I like to use vibrant colors in one piece, and then dark and brooding ones in the next. It’s really an on and off thing. I hope to discover why I use certain colors soon, but for now it’s a mystery. Perhaps the colors I use express my mood on any given day.
